With her past holding her captive, will she take a chance and leap with her heart wide open? Returning home from the war and struggling to find his way, will he be the one to catch her before she falls?
It’s time for Grayce Walters’ feisty tattooed Office Assistant Hollie Baker to face facts. She’s come a long way from living on the streets and has finally found a job she loves which brought her friends and trust – neither she’d thought she’d be capable of. Yet when everything comes unraveled in the blink of an eye, she’ll have to deal with issues that are far greater than her troubled past. And discover that sometimes what you need the most might just be found in the one person you failed to see coming. After being injured in an IED explosion in Afghanistan, Sergeant Nick Welby never thought he’d be returning stateside trying to reenter civilian life while suffering PTSD. With Talley, his military bomb-sniffing golden lab at his side, he’s stunned to learn their particular skill set is needed in the last place he’d ever imagined. While working the case and trying to find ways under the skin of the prickly yet intriguing Hollie Baker, he and his trusty K-9 are thrust into a highly treacherous situation with the one girl who might just be worth the risk. Is she willing to surrender? Does he have the right weapons to breach through her defenses? Emotions intensified, the duo must determine a way to work together to assist Grayce Walters in her latest and highly precarious case. With everything Hollie’s come to find important on the line, including her fragile heart, can these two unlikely partners work together to save themselves and each other before it’s too late? Is Nick ready to take on the challenge of shattering the chains that lock away Hollie’s capacity to love and trust? It’s as they learn what’s going down at the Port Commissioners Office on the waterfront that Hollie finds herself leaning on the one person she’s been trying hardest to push away – Nick. And in learning to trust Nick is she willing to take the biggest leap of all and open herself up to something and someone so much more than she’s ever imagined. Can they learn they’re better together than they are apart? Find out in Men Under Fire, the companion novel to Women Under Fire. You might think you know this story, but you haven’t read it from Hollie and Nick’s Point of View. Readers old and new finally have a chance to watch the sparks fly and ignite as their journey unfolds. And along the way we’ll watch to see if this pair learn that sometimes it’s easier to work together to face the painful issues that haunt you than when it comes to helping prevent utter devastation in Seattle.
excerpt
Hollie Thomas headed down Thirty-Fourth to the copy place with Sgt. Welby and his dog. Hollie’s long strides couldn’t match Sgt. Welby’s. She almost had to run to keep up. He was quiet and tense as they dodged people on the sidewalk. Talley also appeared to be on duty, her entire body alert with her head held high. Hollie peeked from underneath her eyelashes to look up at the impressive soldier. The sunlight glistened on his angular face and forehead. He definitely had the whole stud package going for him—tall, broad shoulders, sandy-blond hair, and killer bright eyes. He was unlike any man she had known. Like the heroes in the movies, he had the penetrating blue eyes of Ryan Gosling and the boy-next-door look of Chris Hemsworth. Although not as big as the Marvel comic book hero Thor, Sgt. Welby looked as if he could hammer anyone who got in his way. He looked down at her right as she was checking him out. Oh, shit. His full lips curved into a full-wattage, sexy smile. Did he know what his smile did to women? She guessed that he knew the impact of his boyish face and crinkly blue eyes. He must have women throwing themselves at him all the time. “A penny for your thoughts?” Oh, buggers. “I was wondering what the tat is on your wrist. Battles you’ve fought?” His lashes shuttered down as his jaw muscles tightened. “They’re in honor of men from my unit who died.” Going from bad to worse. “I’m sorry.” “It’s fine. Lots of people ask,” he answered in an abrupt voice she hadn’t heard before. His azure eyes stared back at her, and his lip curled into a quirky smile. “I like your tat.” Man, he was adept at switching things up. She wasn’t bad at banter, but with Sgt. Welby, the game felt different, exhilarating. She gave him back her best radioactive smile and asked in a sultry voice, “Which one?” Let his mind spin on that for a while. She had never tried to mess with the Captain America types, but she knew how to deal with the assholes on the street. He stopped mid-step. A little joy buoyed up inside her. She liked getting a reaction from him. She had spent the entire time when he’d come into the office ignoring his hot, forceful stares and trying to hide her reaction. He gave out a long whistle between his teeth. Good to know she could get to him. “You know you’re playing a dangerous game.” She widened her eyes, feigning total innocence. “I’ve no idea what you’re talking about.” He pulled back, his squared chin tucked in, and looked at her from her sandals up her legs to her chest before looking at her face. Captured like a deer in the headlights by Nick’s intensity, she didn’t squirm and, she hoped to God, didn’t reveal how nervous he made her with his piercing stare. She felt the heat and the scrutiny as if he were touching her. He was really good at this seduction game. She might not be good at the game, but she wasn’t ignorant of the creepy ways of men. As an adolescent, she had been subjected to the filthy minds of her dad’s meth associates. With their leering, lascivious looks, the obscene bastards made an innocent young girl feel dirty. For some reason, Nick’s stare didn’t disgust her—the opposite, in fact.
