That is until she comes face-to-face with the one man she never expected to see again.

Jesse Yates was supposed to escape the mountains, make something of himself, and attain every dream Lenore destroyed. He’s determined to wear down her resolve and win her back, but she’s got a secret to keep and reasons to keep her old flame at arm’s length.

Excerpt

A sharp rap on my open classroom door precedes the entrance of my new boss into my professional sanctuary. I can’t fault him for his dominance here and now. This is his building. I’m his employee who he’s contractually bound to supervise.
I still haven’t come up with a new plan to circumvent that twist of fate. Mostly because my wildest dreams have no place in my current reality.
Jesse perches on the edge of the student desk closest to mine, his forest-green eyes boring into me. That’s ironic, considering he couldn’t be bothered to make direct eye contact for the duration of our faculty meeting. He’s sure making up for it now. His gaze sweeps me from head to toe quickly, then he starts over again much, much slower.
I let him drink his fill because I’m hungry to do the same. The past five years have been so good to him. He’s removed his jacket and vest, leaving me to feast on a white dress shirt and red tie that look like they cost a pretty penny. The hint of his physique I noticed in the auditorium is much more pronounced without added layers. Scrawny until the night I left him, his arms now look as strong as they used to feel when they were wrapped around me tight. Biceps bulge against the fabric of his shirt. A row of buttons clings to his flat stomach then disappears beneath his belt. His smooth dress pants hug muscular thighs that used to thrust against me until pleasure I never knew was possible made me feel so high I wondered if I’d ever be able to come back down.
I’m down now, all right.
His heavy gaze touches me in all the places that the years haven’t been as kind to me.
I squirm in my seat, cursing Mama and Liz’s choice of dress. There’s no way to hide the bulge of my belly or the breasts that aren’t as perky as the last time he caressed them. At least that’s one thing going for me. He’s matured and aged like a fine wine, but any physical trait I used to possess that attracted him to me is long gone.
His voice sounds the same, even if it’s softer now than the last time I heard it. “I have imagined this moment in so many different ways over the past five years, but now that it’s here…I don’t rightly know what to say.”
I nod even though I never imagined this moment at all.

Excerpt

“Thank you,” Jinx said.
That mouth. She heard his words, but she read I wonder what you taste like in his eyes. “You’re welcome. I’m…” This is crazy.
Cut it out. You’re here for his mom.
He has a girlfriend.
The reminder dumped a pot of cold water on her libido. And, yeah, it sucked that she’d missed her shot with him, but maybe this trip—what she’d done for his mom—made up for the way she’d treated him.
“I’m happy to be here.” Her voice came out as dry and scratchy as sandpaper.
When his tongue came out and licked his bottom lip, she watched it, aware of the tingly sensations running down her spine and pulsing between her legs. The way her heart thundered, and desire blossomed across her skin told her she felt something very different from happy.
She was attracted to Jinx in a way she’d never felt before.
This is why I pushed him away.
Because it scared her half to death. Eddie had been her first love, and when he’d abandoned her, he’d broken more than her heart. He’d shattered her ability to trust.
But Jinx was a man. A once-in-a-lifetime kind of man. She could love him in that profound, in-sickness-or-in-health kind of way.
Which meant…he could destroy her.
He’s worth the risk.
And right then she knew it. If things didn’t work out with his girlfriend, if he ever wanted to give her a second chance, she would absolutely, whole-heartedly take that risk.
When gratitude left his expression, when color rose high in his cheeks, when his gaze drifted down to her mouth, she knew he’d read every emotion in her heart. She released his hand. “Sorry.”
“For what?”
“Your girlfriend won’t appreciate me touching you. I know I wouldn’t want to see another woman’s hands on you.”
He took her hand back. “We broke up.”
Her body went hot. The clash of excitement and fear made her sick to her stomach. “You…what? Why? When?”
“Last night. Right before you came to my room.”
“But why? She’s so nice and…happy.”
“Yeah, I know. That’s why I dated her. She came out of nowhere…pulled me out of my cave, but I never caught feelings, you know?”
This weird, weightless feeling came over her. She wasn’t on the couch anymore. She was hovering, hope beating a painful drumbeat in her heart. Thoughts floated, but she refused to pull them in, to let them settle long enough to read them. Is this happening?
Could he be coming back to her? She reached for the armrest to keep her grounded.
“And I guess being around you really drove that home.”
Happiness hit like a punch to the chest, knocking her back. Tears burned, and she couldn’t explain it. It made no sense. “You…have feelings for me?”
“I think you know I always have. It’s cool. I know you’re not into me. But it’s there for me, and I can’t pretend it’s not. So, I ended it. It’s not fair to be thinking of one woman when you’re with someone else.”
She could barely speak past the emotions hurtling through her. “She must be devastated.” Her voice sounded scraped raw. A hot tear spilled onto her cheek.
He reared back. “Oh, Jesus. I didn’t mean to upset you.”
She shook her head. “You didn’t. I’m just…” An army of fire ants marched through her body. She was stinging, burning…and… “I’m scared.”
“Of me?” He looked appalled.
“No, no.” She swiped the tear away. “Of this. Us.”
He leaned in close. “Why? Why does it scare you?”
“God, Jinx. Because it’s big, this thing. We’re…we’re everything.”

Hey, I’m home. Can we talk?
Mr. Evasive’s text message lit up my cell shortly after 8 p.m., right as my head hit the pillow. Anytime before midnight would have normally been considered too early of a bedtime for me. After-dark hours were dedicated to online coursework, and since I had a sociology paper due, my ass should have been sitting at our kitchen table, energy drink and carb-filled snacks at the ready. Given the day’s events, however, sleep beckoned with a demand for me to squeeze my eyes shut and dream the world’s biggest shitstorm day away. Besides, in order to complete online assignments, I needed my stupid laptop, and that dirty little accomplice to bloggergate had yet to be found.
Grimacing, I eyed his tardy text, contemplating whether or not to ignore it, just as I’d ignored the patter of his footsteps meandering past my bedroom door when he arrived home twenty minutes earlier.
To be honest, I’d grown downright irritated with Lucas Stone. I mean, what kind of a best friend allowed twelve hours to saunter by before he finally responded to a text with some breezy, non-fucking-chalant “Hey, I’m home. Can we talk?” bullshit?
Blood simmering, I fired off a quick reply.
Me: No.
Good one, right? One-hundred percent straight and to the point.
Text bubbles bounced on the screen, my heart thumping in anticipation.
Lucas: Why not?
Seriously, dude?
Thumbs pounding the cracked screen, I keyed in my response.
Me: Because you’re a duck.
Seconds later, Lucas deployed an army of duck emojis to my phone.
Ugh. I swear, autocorrect had a personal vendetta against me.
Me: DUCK! I meant to type, you’re a duck!
This time my smart-ass roombestie replied with a Donald Duck GIF. There was no use trying to quell the snicker that slipped free; shit was hilarious.
Beats skedaddled by before another message came through.
Lucas: Hey, I’m sorry. I should’ve replied to your text earlier, should’ve had the decency not to leave you hanging.
Tears pricked my eyes, a fury of the day’s emotional roller coaster coursing through me. He was trying to butter me up and, dammit, I hated how easily it worked.
Me: Fine. Apology accepted. But I’m not quite ready to talk.
The half-truth set my belly ablaze. Part of me wanted to talk, longed to get everything officially out in the open, evaporate the cloud of awkwardness destined to linger over us forevermore.
Lucas: No talking. Just ice cream. I picked up a gallon of our favorite from CreamWorks.
Me: Mocha Mania?
Lucas: You know it. Meet me in the kitchen in five? I need to start a load of laundry first.
He knew I’d cave, clever to coax me with my favorite ice cream as though I were Eve, unable to resist forbidden fruit.
Me: Okay, but you’re still a duck.
Of course, I typed duck instead of dick on purpose, knowing damn well he’d have some smart-ass reply.
Lucas: Quack, quack.
Jerk.
