Defining a legacy is never easy.

Blurb

Beta Donnell Ursus Arctos devotes his life to protecting his leader and defending every bear in his clan. Some call him overprotective, but Donnell prioritizes safety. When he’s not working, Donnell has simple hobbies that others consider boring. Although Donnell is surrounded by family, wealth, and prestige, the bear shifter pines for Fate to pair him with the other half of his soul.

For Joshua Brenton, little is going right. On the same day, Josh loses his job and his run-down apartment. But there is a bright light on the horizon—the annual retreat for mages. As an aqua mage, Josh has been disrespected since birth, but Fate has recently selected new leaders. After sweeping changes are made, Josh is randomly selected to prove his worth in the newly instituted mage testing.

Josh is stunned when he meets the mage rulers and is invited to their home. Upon ringing the doorbell to the mansion, Josh meets Donnell, and they discover that they are mates. Although the pair are instantly drawn to each other, Josh learns he is more than a mage and must unravel a past he’d prefer to forget. It will be up to Josh and Donnell to chart a future while dealing with the surprises they encounter along the way.

Excerpt

“You like magic, don’t you?” Donnell asked.

“Yeah, why?”

“You’re casting quite a few spells right now. You must’ve done well in school.”

After glancing down, Josh chuckled. “I swear sometimes I’m not even conscious of what I’m doing. But school wasn’t my favorite thing.”

“Any particular reason?”

“Not important. We need to discuss my questions.”

There was a line between Josh’s brows that kept Donnell from pressing the subject. It was too soon to prod him on a topic, and if Josh wanted to work through issues, Donnell was happy to help.

“Okay. Let’s talk. Is this about being a warlock or our matebond?”

“I can’t believe we have an our anything. I like it.”

Enchanted, Donnell smiled at him. “Me too. Now, answer my question.”

“I guess it’s related to the matebond thing. Specifically, to you being a bear.”

“I know we were in a room full of people earlier, but I meant what I said. I’d like to create trust between us, and once it’s there, I have no intention of breaking it. From the time I learned what it was to have a mate, I yearned for one. I’ve had casual sex, and it can be fantastic, but being in a happy matebond is infinitely more enticing to me.”

“Kinda pisses me off that I’m getting a visual of you fucking some stranger,” Josh remarked.

“Then stop thinking about it.”

“Yeah, good idea,” Josh said with a shake of his head. Whether Josh was aware of it or not, his plethora of spheres, rings of shifting colors, and other minor spells reappeared. “I need to know other stuff about bears.”

“Okay. Are you unfamiliar with shifters?”

“I don’t always have my face in a book or anything, but I’ve learned a few tidbits. I haven’t studied bears specifically, though, and I need to get my head on straight. Let’s start with the one that probably would have the biggest impact on the future. Do you hibernate?”

Donnell chuckled. “No, I don’t hibernate.”

“You don’t have to sound so outraged. Wild bears do.”

“Yes, but I also have a human side.”

“Is honey your favorite thing ever?”

“Yes, because life is a cartoon,” Donnell drawled. At Josh’s unamused glare, Donnell grinned. “I like honey.”

“See, I knew it. I was waiting for it to show up on the table today but thought maybe you guys considered it too much of a delicacy to put out for sharing.”

“No, we only put honey on appropriate things.”

“Have you ever gotten freaky with honey?” Josh asked.

“I’ve put it on a grape before.”

“Is that a metaphor for some dude with small balls?”

“I will not sit here and discuss my past experiences with you,” Donnell told him. “That’s not the kind of thing anyone should tell their mate.”

“So, no freaky honey sex.”

“Not yet.”

Josh grinned. “Oh, I’m totally down for honey sex if you want.”

“We’ll save it for a special occasion.”

“Have you ever forgotten you weren’t in bear form while you were near a river and caught a salmon in your teeth?” Josh asked.

“Surprisingly enough, that’s never happened. Let me ask you a thing or two.”

“Sure, but have you ever rubbed your butt on a tree in human or bear form?”

“Not that I recall. Have you peed your pants because you were too lazy to get up and knew you could use magic to make it disappear?” Donnell inquired.

“Let me master my element so I don’t have to get up to take a piss,” Josh groused, but he was laughing. “Allow me to paint you a picture. You’re out and about. Suddenly, you’re hungry. You happen to be walking past a residential situation. Do you go rummage through some trash cans to find a snack?”

“I assume I’m shifted?”

“Maybe. Maybe not. You tell me,” Josh demanded.

EXCERPT

“Do you…” Raingar swallows, sounding perturbed himself. It’s enough to bring my gaze back up to his. He swallows again. “Would you like to be a pleasure female?” His voice cracks a dozen times over those eight little words, if I’m counting correctly.
A rogue smile breaks out over my face, completely twisting the shame that had been spiraling through me until it winks out of existence. I lick my lips. His gaze flutters down to them. I inhale deeply. His gaze flutters down to my breasts.
“Yeffa.”
His expression hardens, eyes snapping back to mine. I can hear the sound of his fingertips scraping over the hard wood on either side of my head.
And then I whisper, “But only for the right male.” I hope he hears the implication that I’m too much of a coward to voice as a demand. I hope he hears my need.
I think he does, because his face morphs into a mask of shock, but he recovers quickly. Pressing his entire body forward slightly so that we’re separated by little more than my forearm’s length, his heat washes over me.
“Just for one male?”
“Yeffa. Just for one male.”
He chokes and comes forward a little more, to the point that I lose focus on his face and look at his chest instead. I have to clench my palms around my scar in order to stop from touching him. A female must wait for permission before touching the male… Ohr that.
I slide my palm over his pectoral, smoothing over the flat, dark brown nipple.
He bends down and growls in my ear, “But Essmira, would you not rather be a mate?”
“A mate?”
“Yeffa. A mate.”
My fingers slide down…down… “I don’t know anything about that.” I touch the top of his pants, fingers so dangerously close to the single strap that holds them up on his narrow hips. So close, I could just…pull it.
He sucks in a breath, his eyelids fluttering over his striated eyes. So many colors. So many layers. Not unlike the male himself. “Would you like to?”

AUTHOR BIO

Elizabeth Stephens writes romance of the SciFi, paranormal and suspenseful varieties. Her favorite trope is enemies-to-lovers and she loves to world-build so much so that she sometimes gets lost in places that don't exist.

One year into her author journey, she's been shocked to see her books listed among Amazon's bestsellers in their categories. Still, her favorite pieces of fanmail are from BIPOC women expressing surprise and gratitude that they've found an author who looks like them and (does her very best!) to write books that make them feel included.

Other than writing, Elizabeth also likes to throw very exciting-looking pottery on her balcony in Berlin where she lives with her loving husband (who bought her said pottery wheel for her last birthday) and her doggo, King Louis. Though she's lived over half her life abroad, she still calls Seattle home.

EXCERPT

I hated that son of a bitch, with every inch of my being. Could I believe I was thinking this about Broderick now? No, but his behavior had put me on edge.
Our eyes met as soon as I entered the bar. Not even the darkness of the environment could prevent the stare down that occurred. His blue eyes clashed with mine and warning bells sounded in my mind.
I pulled at the dark denim jacket that I had thrown on over my low-cut black shirt and jeans with black flats. The perfect outfit for me for this spring evening. I tucked a piece of my blonde hair behind my ear and smiled at the bartender when I approached. I ordered a light beer and received it immediately, basking in the fact that I didn’t have to pay due to my brother having an open bar.
“There’s my favorite little sister.”
I smiled at the moniker. “I’m your only little sister,” I said as I turned around. There standing behind me was my older brother, IPA in hand, ready to be the life of the party.
“I’m glad you could make it.”
“Same, but I wouldn’t miss your promotion celebration for the world. I’m so proud of you.”
I leaned in to hug him and when I looked over his shoulder, I saw the only person who was currently on my shit list.
“Hey, man, congrats again on the promotion.”
Broderick came around Hunter’s left side while I stood on his right. It took everything in me not to roll my eyes. I waved my brother off when one of his friends called his name and all that was left were two piercing blue eyes staring back at me.
“Grace.”
I let out a deep breath. “I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Tough shit. I want to talk to you.”
He had some damn nerve. I leaned over and whispered to him, “I’m not talking to you about anything related to my personal life because it is none of your concern. Better yet, I don’t want to talk to you at all. So leave.”
That didn’t do anything to deter him. “Hellion, if you want to experience Elevate up close and personal, all you have to do is ask. Not entertain the idea of some asshole in a cheap three-piece suit taking you there.”
My mood soured. Broderick had the audacity to say these things, but I refused to sit here and tolerate it. I took another swig of my beer before I put it back down on the bar and turned to him. “Who knew how much of an asshole you could be? Wait, don’t answer that. Have a good night.”
I hoped the bite in my tone told him that I wanted him to have anything but. I made my way through the crowd and found my brother.
“Listen, Hunt, something came up and I need to head out,” I whispered in his ear.
“Already?” The look of disappointment made me feel like shit, but I knew if I stayed, Broderick would be watching me like a hawk all night, which was disturbing, whereas my own brother wouldn’t do this. I also didn’t trust myself not to snap at him again. Hunter opened his arms and I stepped into his embrace. “Do you want me to walk you to the subway?”
I shook my head. “No. Don’t miss out on your own party because of me. I might decide to take a cab. I’ll call you later.”
“You better.”
I gave him one last smile before I strolled toward the door. Just before I reached it, I looked up and found Broderick staring back at me from another corner of the room. He lifted his beer in a mock salute, and I gave him my one-finger one in return. Two could play this immaturity game.
I pulled out my phone to call a car and saw that the wait time was way longer than I wanted to deal with. I adjusted my jacket over my body, applied a coat of lip gloss, and put my phone back in my purse before I wandered down the street. I had walked a couple of buildings away from the bar before I heard a low groan coming from my left. When I looked, I found a dimly lit alleyway, but I saw nothing in the darkness.
Is someone over there? Where did that noise come from?
Although fear swam through my mind, I knew I had to do something. That was when I saw someone leaning against a brick wall and it was clear that they were hurting in some way. As I started to walk into the alley, another figure appeared from the shadows and walked up to the person and the next thing I heard was a croak. The figure backed away from the person, who slowly slid down the brick wall.
Did…did I just see someone get stabbed?
A scream bubbled below the surface, and I knew if it erupted from my mouth I would draw the attention of the person still in the alleyway. Before I could emit any sound or run away, I felt a hand slip over my lips, and another around my waist as I was dragged away from the opening of the alley. That something felt warm against my lips. Since I still had the ability to fight, there was no way I was going down without one. I fought against my attacker, and I heard a grunt before someone said, “Grace, cut it out.”
Broderick?
“Let me go!” I screamed, but it was mostly muffled by what I now knew to be Broderick’s hand.
He continued pulling me back until he whispered in my ear, “I’m going to remove my hand, but you have to promise not to scream.”
I nodded my head quickly and he did as he said he would. As he wiped his hand, removing the remnants of my lip gloss from it, I said, “Broderick, I might be able to save his life, let me go.”
“Do you want to save your own? Be quiet and follow me.
